The Name Game – Boys

Baby Names: Then and Now

Unless you’re expecting a baby—or like to name your furry dependents as if they were human—you probably don’t spend much time thinking about baby names. Or maybe you’re one of those folks who’ve always disliked the name your parents lovingly (or randomly) chose for you, and you’re considering a change.

Whatever the reason, I found myself curious about how names have evolved over the years.

I was born in the 1950s (yes, I know, I’m vintage!), and back then, many names had strong biblical inspiration. Think James, John, David, and Deborah. Mary and Ruth were staples too—names that carried tradition, meaning, and a sense of timelessness.

So what’s trending today? Spoiler alert: Deborah didn’t even crack the top 20. But James is still holding strong at #5.

👶 Top Ten Baby Names for Boys

If any of my readers are currently wrestling with baby name decisions—for a child, a pet, or even a character in a story—let me help. According to the latest data from the U.S. government, here are the top 10 baby boy names, fresh off the press:

  1. Liam – A short form of William, Liam hails from Ireland and may owe its popularity to stars like Liam Neeson and Liam Hemsworth.
  2. Noah – Straight out of the Bible, Noah built the ark and saved mankind (and a whole lot of animals) from the great flood.
  3. Oliver – A classic name popular in the U.S., UK, and Australia. It always makes me think of “Oliver Twist.”
  4. Theodore – With ancient Greek roots meaning “gift of God,” Theodore offers charming nicknames like Theo, Ted, and Teddy.
  5. James – Another biblical favorite, James has stood the test of time as a strong, traditional name.
  6. Henry – Derived from the Germanic name Heimirich, Henry means “home ruler.” Nicknames include Hal, Hank, and Harry.
  7. Mateo – A nod to Spanish heritage, Mateo also means “gift of God” and is the Spanish version of Matthew.
  8. Elijah – Another biblical powerhouse, Elijah was a prophet and miracle worker in the Old Testament.
  9. Lucas – From the Greek “Lucania,” this name is also linked to the Latin word lucerne, meaning “to shine.” Lucas is the “bringer of light,” with nicknames like Luke and Lucky.
  10. William – A perennial favorite, William has never left the top 20 in America since 1880. You just can’t go wrong with Bill.

According to Good Housekeeping, the answer is a resounding yes. They’ve compiled a list of 21 reasons why September babies are extra special. I won’t spoil the whole list, but a few fun facts caught my eye—and I couldn’t resist sharing.

🍼 Fact #1: September Is the Most Common Birth Month in the U.S.

Let’s do the math. September is the ninth month. Human gestation takes about nine months. So what was happening in the U.S. right before January? Ah yes—holiday parties, mistletoe mischief, and New Year’s Eve revelry. It all adds up. Conception abounds!

🎂 Fact #2: September Babies Have a Better Shot at Reaching 100

The article doesn’t explain why, but statistically, more people born in September live to see triple digits. Maybe it’s all that autumn air and birthday cake?

🚌 Fact #3: You’re Likely the Oldest in Your Class

Thanks to the September 1 school enrollment cutoff, many September-born kids get an extra year before hopping on the big yellow bus. That means a head start in height, maturity, and maybe even snack negotiation skills.

🍁 Fact #4: September Folks Are Less Prone to Mood Disorders

Could it be the crisp fall weather, golden leaves, and pumpkin-scented everything? Whatever the reason, September babies tend to be a little sunnier in disposition.

😮‍💨 Fact #5: But… You’re More Prone to Respiratory Issues

September giveth and September taketh away. Asthma and other respiratory conditions are more common among those born this month. At least you’ll be cheerful while catching your breath?

☀️ Fact #6: Born on September 16? You Share a Birthday with Positive Thinking Day

Coincidence? Maybe. But if you’re a September 16 baby, you might just radiate optimism. Or at least have a good excuse to fake it.

🍕 Fact #7: My Personal Favorite—September 20 Is National Pepperoni Pizza Day

That’s right. You can celebrate your birthday with pizza and cake. Two major food groups, one glorious day. Yum!

If you want to see all 21 reasons, check out the full article in Good Housekeeping. As a February baby myself, I can’t vouch for the accuracy—but I might be just a teensy bit jealous.

So here’s to you, September stars. May your month be filled with joy, deep breaths, and extra slices of pepperoni pizza. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, sweet boy—love you bunches. You’re sharing your special day with World Lizard Day, which might not be your idea of a party theme, but I couldn’t resist celebrating these scaly wonders.

I might be a little weird, but I genuinely like lizards. They fascinate me. I especially adore those tiny lizards I see everywhere when I visit Florida. I believe they’re called Anoles—there are brown ones and green ones, and I think they’re seriously cute. They dart around like little garden ninjas.

Then there are the Iguanas. Bigger, bolder, and a bit intimidating. They come in vibrant shades of green and orange, lounging like royalty on sidewalks and rooftops.

So in honor of World Lizard Day (and Balboa’s birthday, of course), here are some fun and fascinating facts about lizards that might just make you see them in a whole new light. I may find them interesting, but don’t worry—I’m not about to bring one home as a pet.

🌿 12 Lizard Facts to Make You Smile (or Squirm)

Many lizards can detach their tails to escape predators. The tail keeps twitching while the lizard makes a clean getaway—like a magic act with a dramatic exit.
  2. Color-Changing Cuties
Green Anoles can shift from green to brown depending on mood, temperature, or stress. They’re like tiny, scaly mood rings.
  3. Built-In Motion Sensor
Iguanas have a “third eye” on top of their heads called a parietal eye. It doesn’t see images but detects light and movement—perfect for spotting sneaky predators.
  4. Push-Up Power Moves
Lizards often do push-ups or head bobs to show dominance or attract mates. It’s like their version of flexing at the gym.
  5. Water Walkers
The Basilisk lizard can run across water using its speed and wide feet. It’s nicknamed the “Jesus Lizard” for this miraculous feat.
  6. Tongue-Tasting the Air
Like snakes, lizards use their tongues to “taste” the air and detect scents. It’s their way of sniffing out dinner or danger.
  7. Sun Worshippers
Being cold-blooded, lizards bask in the sun to warm up and energize. You’ll often find them stretched out on rocks like tiny solar panels.
  8. Natural Pest Control
Lizards love munching on insects like mosquitoes, flies, and ants. They’re nature’s pest patrol—no chemicals required.
  9. Miniature Dragons
Draco lizards can glide between trees using wing-like ribs. They’re real-life dragonlets soaring through the forest canopy.
  10. Ancient Survivors
Lizards have been around for over 200 million years. They’ve outlived dinosaurs and still strut their stuff across the globe.
  11. Venomous but Chill
The Gila monster and Mexican beaded lizard are venomous, but they’re slow-moving and rarely aggressive. Just don’t poke them.
  12. All-Female Wonder Lizards
Some whiptail lizard species reproduce without males through parthenogenesis. No dates, no drama—just cloning themselves like pros.

So here’s to Balboa,

Banner’s Another Year Older

Banner’s Birthday

Well my, my, my. Hard to believe my orange baby is 5 years old already. Happy Birthday Banner! Actually his birthday was June 6 but as usual I’m a little behind.

Roadkill

This is Banner’s imitation of road kill. He’s as flat to the floor as he can get. Look at his little legs all squished down.

Bag Boy

“Bag Boy, Bag Boy, what you going to do? And what you going to do when they come for you?”

All Banner wanted for his birthday was a paper bag so he could hide. Right? You really can’t see him at all! Please don’t tell him different. I’m sure he’d be crushed. If so Chewy sent him a 30% off discount coupon for a new toy. I’m sure that will help offset any disappointment that his bag isn’t really hiding him.

In Other News

I mentioned that I was a bit delayed with this post. That’s because I’ve been working on a new project. Yes once again I am trying to stretch my entrepreneurial muscles and we all know how that’s gone in the past. Still hope springs eternal so at my advanced age I am going to give it one more try. I want to have the project a little more along before I make the GRAND ANNOUNCEMENT.  But you will hear it soon if all goes well. Stay tuned!

I’m very excited and hope you will be too!

Banner is 4 Years old today

Banner’s Birthday

It’s hard to believe its Banner’s Birthday and he is  4 years old today! Those 4 years went by so fast. He was such a cute little thing when I brought him home. Now he’s a big fluffy orange tiger cat. Yes, he has the orange cat single brain cell. He makes me laugh most of the time. He’s also a catnip addict.

Banner Was So Tiny

When I first brought Banner home he was so tiny and cute. I had no idea he would turn into such a giant Floof ball.  His picture popped up in my Facebook feed. I wasn’t looking for a new cat but he was just so cute. His adoption was handled through Project Safe Pet.

Banner Really Grew Fast

After a couple of months I worried that Banner would be lonesome if I went back to work in an office when COVID passed so I got him a little friend.  Balboa was only a couple of months younger but look at the size difference! Banner was already a big boy!

Banner and his little friend

Balboa is so small next to Banner he looks like a little mouse.

Time flies

Banner soon fluffed out into his grown up cat fur.  Don’t you think he’s a beautiful boy?

The Orange Cat Single Braincell in Action

Can you see me now?

Did I mention that his favorite trick is to steal my fitbit off the charger every morning. Sometimes I catch him and sometimes it turns into a search for the fitbit.  He hides it well!

More Floof

How can you not love something so fluffy. Yea he gets brushed every day and he’s quite the DIVA about it. He has his own brush and comb and expects me to groom him even before I can get myself ready in the morning.
