And Now You Know the Rest of the Story

I left the dealership feeling pretty good about my purchase. It may not be coming at the time I planned but I was starting to get excited about it.

It was time to get my feet back on the ground and address the problem of getting my poor old baby back home.

It sounded worse than ever when I turned the key and it tried to stall anytime I let up on the gas. I managed to make it up the hill out of the dealership and made a right turn. Less than 100 yards later it stopped dead. I got it to turn over one more time and run long enough to get it into an empty parking lot.

Time for AAA. They arrived in about 20 minutes and had me loaded up for the drive home. I’m not going to try to drive it again. 2 tows in one day is enough. It’s done.

RIP little White Saturn. You’ve been a good reliable car for 15 years. I will miss you.

As soon as I got inside I logged on and found a charity to donate the car to. I hope to hear from them this week to arrange a pick up.

In the meantime I have to track down the title. I tried to order a duplicate but the bank never released the lien at the registry.   I can see what I’ll have to do tomorrow when the bank opens to get them to release something from 10 years ago. It’s never easy is it!

The Hunt for a New Car

Since I knew the time was coming when I would need to say good-bye to my old Saturn, I’d started to do some searching online about various cars and trucks. I knew I wanted more cargo space so that meant an SUV or a truck.

I wasn’t thrilled with having to shovel out the truck bed in the winter but I liked the idea of having that open bed if I wanted to set up the tripod and take some shots of something over the heads of a crowd. Then there is the make to consider; Honda, Chevy Toyota, Kia, Ford  and the list goes on and on.

I’ve rented a lot of Toyota’s. They seem to be popular with car rental companies but I’m just never comfortable in them. I just don’t like the way they drive. I know they are really popular and have a great reputation but I set them aside.

I keep circling back to GMC products. My last 2 cars were Saturn’s which were GMC step children and I loved both cars. In fact, my current Saturn still looks good even if it isn’t running. If Saturn was still around it would be no contest. I’d be back in their showroom.

The mechanics got my car running again but it was loud and rough and they couldn’t give me any guarantees. My first thought was to get it home and parked but then I realized I needed transportation to a dealership. Instead of heading home I turned the opposite way. I made it as far as  McGee Chevrolet. Guess that solves one question.

I had a great Salesman. I gave him my list of requests, I wanted GPS, a hot spot, cargo space, front wheel drive and power locks & windows. I did not want  4 wheel or all wheel drive because of the tire balancing issue.  If possible I wanted the color white.

Jeff showed me a couple of models and I decided on the Equinox because of the extra cargo space. Its only a 4 cylinder so it should get good gas mileage. The only thing I couldn’t get was the color white. I didn’t want to wait for them to look for a white car. I needed a car asap. They had a gray one on the lot so that was it. I took it for a test drive and signed the papers.

Monday morning they will run it to the registry for plates and give me a call. By this time tomorrow I’ll have wheels again.

So Wassup?

Wow, Things aren’t letting up at all. Last weekend I stole an hour or two to head out with the camera. Still trying to get the hang of this “Raw” stuff. I got a few practice shots but I just wasn’t feeling inspired.

Just a day on a Swan

Just a day on a Swan

Then Sunday, Mother’s Day I left Taunton early in the morning to drive to upstate NY to take my mother out for lunch. I can’t tell you how old she is. I am sworn to secrecy but if I have her genes I’ll be around for a long time. My sister went with us to the 99 restaurant where we enjoyed a very pleasant lunch. I was back home by 8 pm.

During the week I confirmed my Maine trip in July with the Audubon Society and started doing the preliminary research for the Maui vacation in November. Then Saturday dawned sunny and warm. The first really awesome day we’ve had in forever!

I had an appointment for an oil change at 10 am. From there I planned to go to the Norton Reservoir where I’d spotted a family of Swans to see if I could get some fun pictures of the cygnets.

I picked up my car after the oil change  and headed up RT 44. At the first set of lights the car stalled out! Strange it was running fine when I dropped it off. I started it up and off I went again. A bit farther down the road I got a text message and pulled off into a Dunkin Donuts to reply. Stalled again. What’s going on?

The last straw was as I pulled up to the reservoir. The engine started shaking and there was a squeeking, clanging kind of sound so I pulled into the parking lot for Norton Liquors and called the service station. They agreed to send a tow truck. While I waited I took a few pictures of the adult swan and the babies.

Hurry Up.

Once back at the shop we checked the oil and it was clearly fresh and full. After a diagnostic and multiple mechanics looking it over the car was pronounced in dire shape.

It still turned over so they didn’t pronounce it dead but the prognosis was grim. The “lifters” inside the engine were done for. I needed to either replace or rebuild the engine.

It was time to go car shopping.

I’ve Been Missing You

The last couple of weeks have been nuts. Work was crazy, had to take time off for a medical procedure. I’m not sure about this getting old stuff. The doctors don’t leave any part of your body alone. They need to probe every nook and cranny. Those space aliens have nothing on our earthbound doctors!

7  consecutive days of rain so far and if it isn’t raining it’s cloudy and dreary and raw and cold. Not really weather for May.

Rain predicted tomorrow morning and evening but we might get a break and see some blue sky in the afternoon. Mother Nature’s way of saying Happy Mother’s Day!

My poor neglected kitties forgave me when their monthly “Kit Nip” box arrived. Although they find the contents interesting I think the box is still their favorite part.

Trekking Poles

A friend of mine sent me a list of easy hikes in Massachusetts.

Several of them really piqued my interest but after reading the descriptions I felt it would be wise to get another pair of trekking poles. I haven’t done serious hiking since I got hurt several years ago and although I’m feeling much better these days, I’m still not sure of my endurance or balance.

I had an inexpensive pair but I was never able to lock the length of the shaft. It always slipped. Those poles had the external twist lock. Eventually I gave them away. I used my monopod as a walking stick after that.

So having reviewed the type of terrain I’d need to maneuver to do these hikes I decided a pair of trekking poles would be better than the monopod but I wanted to be sure I could adjust them.

I decided to start at Dick’s sporting goods because it was the closest sporting goods store to me.  When I got to the store I asked what department I needed and the clerk began to tell me they probably didn’t have any but if the did they would be with the camping equipment.

I headed toward the camping department with him hot on my heels and talking into his collar like a CIA agent. We were met by the employee assigned to camping.

The first set of poles I was offered had the twist lock. I asked the two clerks if they could show me how they worked. I explained that I was never able to get them to actually lock. Thus started a comical few minutes while they tried to lock the poles only to put  pressure on them and have them collapse. While they fussed over those poles I spotted another set that had an external lever lock.

I picked those out and gave them a flip. They worked perfectly. I interrupted the twist lock testing to tell them I was all set and would take the lever lock set. A got a couple of blank looks and then the clerk from the camping department seemed to recover his wits. He asked some very good questions about my hiking needs and confirmed that these poles were probably better than the twist locks.

I have a feeling that at least one of the clerks is going to be looking into the locking mechanisms closer. The problem with the twist lock caught them both by surprise but Mr. Camping department clerk is also a hiker and before I left with my new poles, he and I exchanged information about local hikes in Massachusetts and the White Mountains of NH.

I hope the weather is nice next weekend. I want to take a hike with my camera and break in these trekking poles.  Maybe Bash Bish Falls would be a good first hike of the season.
