A Day In The Life

A Day in the Life

Good Morning World. I thought I would share a day in my life. Being retired isn’t easy when you have 2 cats. Mine are named Banner (AKA Fluffy Butt)

and Balboa

(Aka Munchkin or Wreck it Ralph or Sir Talks Alot. Some times he’s described as the “Annoying Little Brother”. If I hadn’t had gray hair when I adopted them I would now. I don’t know what has gotten into these guys. The terrible twos maybe?

He was a funny kitten. He didn’t want to sit on anyone’s lap but he did want “pets”. When you gave him those pets he would purr so loud his little body would shake with excitement. Then he’d bite you. He thought it was a love bite.  He still gets that way but he’s bigger now and so are his bites.

The Mini Monster

Balboa is much smaller than Banner but he seems to get in more trouble although appearances can be deceiving.

Balboa taught Banner how to open cupboard doors. He also demands attention- constantly.

Where Banner bites Balboa stretches up a little paw. He’s got the  “look” down pat.

So cute until he extends his sharp little blades of claws. “Pay attention Hooman!” “Pick me up”  Once up he gets picked up he wants to get down so we can do it all over again.

PBR

One of the first things I discovered when I started streaming was the PBR Championships.  For those who don’t know PBR stands for Professional Bull Riding- That’s Rodeo Baby! Bucking bulls mostly but sometimes they throw in calf roping and barrel racing. I love to watch it but Banner and Balboa , not so much. They have a 2 pronged attack. Balboa climbs onto my lap while Banner sneaks behind my chair and proceeds to scratch. I respond with the compressed air can and both run. (Water didn’t work) It doesn’t keep them away long so I try distraction.

We have the feather wand and the Red Dot (Laser pointer) They have a short attention span so that only works for maybe 10-15 minutes. I try cat nip and when all else fails treats. In the meantime I am missing all the PBR action.

Thursday night PBR was on late. 11 pm. I tried to stay awake to watch but gave up around midnight. That’s when Banner decided a serenade was in order.

Midnight Music

The Meows started just as I was drifting off. Banner was sitting in the bathroom so he could get the most amplification for his melody. I got him out of the bathroom, gave him some heavy duty petting and hoped that would settle him down. Nope he headed for the living room to continue with his distressing ballad. I think he wanted to enlist Balboa as back up singer.

It took awhile but finally the concert was over. Right at the edge of sleep I was pounced upon, I guess since Banner was quiet now Balboa was bored and decided to come to bed with me. Mind you, I have a twin bed. That was ok when Balboa was a kitten but he takes up a lot of real estate now that he’s grown.

Finally around 2 AM I managed to fall asleep.

Good Morning!

It’s 5:30 am! Rise and shine. Banner wants breakfast so he’s in the bathroom again.

Not only is he doing the cats version of the top 40, he has opened the medicine cabinet and is pulling everything out into the sink.  Ignoring him is not an option if I am to prevent widespread destruction. That means I got about 4 hours sleep.

With the cats fed I decided to share my woes with all of you. The cats decided to explore the kitchen.  You’d think they were deprived. Look at all the toys!

But they’d rather play with a piece of plastic they found under the sink.

Agh! I’m going to try to get a nap!

Granby Colorado

Good Morning Colorado Seekers

It’s finally starting to feel like spring here in southeastern Massachusetts. The mask mandate has been lifted for out door activities (small groups) and I’m fully vaccinated. Maybe I can shake this cave syndrome soon. I really need to get outside with the camera.  Of course getting myself out the door would be easier if my furry roommates would stop waking me up at unreasonable hours. At my age I can’t burn the candle at both ends!

As mandates and COVID restrictions fall around the country I am hoping that vacation will be back on my agenda for next year. I could probably go this year but will all the attractions I might want to see have opened back up? I would hate to spend that money getting there and then not be able to see many sights. Then there is the problem of the rental car shortage. I’m content with my decision to wait for 2022 before taking a travel vacation.  So let’s continue looking at Colorado for a future destination.

Granby Colorado

Next on the locations list is Granby Colorado. Granby is situated along U.S. Highway 40 in the Middle Park basin, and it is about 85 miles northwest of Denver and 14 miles southwest of Rocky Mountain National Park. Founded in 1905, the sleepy mountain town of Granby, Colorado is quickly gaining popularity as the “in” destination any time of year for vacationers with its friendly atmosphere, ideal location and climate, and close proximity to Denver.

Sapphire Resorts, Granby Co

Granby offers the ultimate Colorado Rocky Mountain experience. Here you’ll find miles of trails to traverse, rivers to fish, lakes to play in, mountains to ski, and golf courses with the most beautiful views. Not to mention Main Street, which boasts lots of restaurants and shopping options.

Places to go & Things to Do in Granby

How about a Rodeo? Granby has it’s own western rodeo .

Granby’s yearly summertime rodeo takes place at the Flying Heels Arena, south of town. A great event for the entire family, there’s always bull riding, roping, barrel racing, games for the kids, and more. Kids can even sign up to compete in mutton busting!

The Junior Rodeo starts in the afternoon, followed by the Open Rodeo in the evenings. Concessions are available so bring your appetite and help the Granby Rotary raise funds for local community programs.

Just down the road from Granby in the nearby town of Fraser, check out the High Country Stampede Rodeo. Remember Fraser? We chatted about Fraser a couple of posts ago.

Of course with Rocky Mountain National Park so close there’s hiking, horseback riding, hot air ballooning,  rafting and scenic drives.

You get culture and entertainment with quick trip into Denver.

A 5 Day Summer Plan

If you go I found a possible 5 day summer itinerary.

  •  Scenic Drive- acclimate to altitude- Day 1
  •  Western experience-  horseback ride and rodeo- Day 2
  • Outdoor adventure- bike or hike- Day 3
  •  Rocky Mountain Memories- Hike to Adams Falls, Visit Grand Lake- Day 4
  •  Get wet- Boating and white water rafting- Day 5

Winter Park Colorado

Winter Park Colorado

I’m still counting down the resort options I have for  Colorado. Next up is Winter Park Colorado. Just by the name I’m betting it’s another ski resort. It’s a pretty familiar name too. I think It’s been in my choice list for awhile. Lets see what I can find out about a Winter Park Vacation.

Summer In Winter Park, Colorado

It sounds like Winter Park is one ski town that has decided to embrace summer. The list seems endless. Toping the list is, of course, hiking. That seems to be a number one recreation at most of the resorts.  And why not?    Colorado is known for it’s beauty and majestic mountains.  But there sure seems to be more   than just hiking.  For example you could go flight seeing.  Aerial flight tours depart daily from Granby airport. Fly high above the valley floor to see the majestic Rocky Mountains, Continental Divide and numerous high alpine lakes.

Maybe Ballooning?

Maybe small planes make you nervous? How about a scenic balloon ride. These look pretty popular. https://www.grandadventureballoon.com/  And the scenery looks breathtaking don’t you think?

Enjoy a taste of the West

Summer in the Rocky Mountains is Rodeo time and Winter Park carries on that tradition. Get a unique perspective on Western history and culture in the Rocky Mountains, and attend one of Winter Park’s signature Western events.

Whether your group includes young children or older adults, there’s plenty of fun and excitement to be had at the High Country Stampede Rodeo and the Middle Park Fair & Rodeo!

For the full experience, start in the late afternoon with mutton busting (little-want-to-be-cowboys kids riding sheep till they slip off), and then grab a delicious BBQ dinner before the main event. Roping cowboys, rodeo queens, bucking broncos and clowns—you won’t want to miss a thing.

Scenic drives

If the “Old West” doesn’t interest you maybe a scenic drive or two . You are only 37 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park where you can find  359 miles of trails, 150 high-alpine lakes, 60 species of mammals, more than 750 camping spots. Oh I wish I’d started traveling when I was younger!

Up Next- Steamboat Springs Colorado

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs, Colorado is next on the list of locations. This was actually the vacation I had scheduled when COVID hit.   Let’s see how it stacks up now that the resort list has expanded. When I chose Steamboat Springs it was because choices were very limited but I really wanted to visit Colorado and check that state off my list. As I researched my options back then I played John Denver‘s  Rocky Mountain High  for inspiration.

What’s Google have to say?

When researching these trips I rely heavily on Google searches. So what did I find about Steamboat springs? “Steamboat Springs is a city in northern Colorado’s Yampa Valley. It’s home to the Howelsen Hill ski area and the Steamboat ski resort. The latter has 6 peaks including Mount Werner. The city’s geothermal hot springs are said to have therapeutic properties. Near the city center, the long-standing Old Town Hot Springs is equipped with swimming and soaking pools, plus water slides”.

Plus when I hear the snow and ski reports Steamboat Springs is always mentioned – “Steamboat Springs got 27 inches of snow last night” The avalanche risk is….” No, skiing Steamboat Springs or anywhere in Colorado  is not on my bucket list although I will admit that those hot springs in winter fascinate me . What would it be like outside in freezing temps in a bathing suit and soaking in steaming water?

Let’s go to a Rodeo

If we plan our vacation between mid-June and Mid-August we can go to a real pro rodeo. I’ve been to rodeo’s but is a real Western Rodeo the same as one of our eastern imitations? I’d love to see a “real” rodeo so I had planned that canceled vacation so that I could attend one. I’ll have to keep it in mind if Steamboat Springs is my choice this time.

What else is there to do in Summer?

If hot springs and rodeos aren’t your cup of tea other activities around Colorado Springs are hiking and Mountain biking. They say the scenery is breathtaking. You can go horseback riding and paddleboard on the lakes. Like waterfalls? You can take a picture of Fish Creek Falls.
And that, my friends about sums up Summer in Steamboat Springs.
