Green Gold: Celebrating National Avocado Day

National Avocado Day

Move over diamonds—avocados are everyone’s favorite precious stone. July 31st is National Avocado Day, a tribute to that creamy, dreamy fruit that turns toast into a love language and guacamole into a cultural experience. Whether you’re slicing it for a salad or sculpting it into sushi, the avocado has earned its place as a culinary icon and aesthetic muse.

May include: A cartoon avocado character wearing a sombrero and playing a guitar. The avocado is green with a smiling face and large eyes. The sombrero is brown and orange with red zigzag patterns. The guitar is light brown with strings. The text https://www.digitalgraphicsshop.etsy.com is visible at the bottom.

But this isn’t just a celebration of taste. It’s a day to reflect on how something so simple can be utterly transformative. The avocado’s velvety texture and rich color have even inspired minimalist art, botanical skincare, and home décor that nods to nature’s elegance.

5 Ways to Celebrate the Day (Beyond Toast):

🕯️ Create an avocado-themed tablescape with soft green linens and candles shaped like the fruit.

  • 📸 Design a flatlay featuring avocados paired with gold cutlery, eucalyptus leaves, and your favorite cat silhouette art.
  • 🪴 Plant an avocado pit and name it something fabulous—Guacarina, perhaps?
  • 🧴 Pamper yourself with avocado-infused skincare for that glow-up ritual.
  • ✍️ Write a poem, short story, or even a product tagline inspired by the lushness of an avocado.

National Avocado Day isn’t just for foodies—it’s for romantics, aesthetes, and dreamers. It’s the kind of fruit that reminds us to savor the moment, layer things with care, and find richness in the everyday.

So here’s to the avocado—nature’s buttery jewel. May your day be ripe with delight.

Whiskers & Wishes: Celebrating My Cats’ Birthdays With Style

Celebrating My Cats’ Birthdays With Style

There’s something delightfully endearing about throwing a birthday celebration for a cat. It’s not just about cake-shaped toys or sardine soufflés—it’s about honoring the quiet companionship, the mysterious glances, and the absolute rulers of our hearts and homes.

🐾 The Feline Lineup

In my home, birthdays come in soft purrs and fluffed tails. Each one of my cats has their own personality, style, and yes—preferred party theme.

  • Banner

Regal Banner

  • Banner turner 5 this year on June 6. Banner is the big brother. He is also my opera singer. Every night we get the songs of his people with his reedition of Moonlight & Meows. His gift was a Pawkitty Water mat.

  • Pet Water Bed,Cat Water Mat 2025 Upgraded Thickened Sensory Water Palymat,Leak-Proof Sensory Playmat,Water Mat for Cats and Dogs,Anti-Scratch Design Waterbed for Indoor Cat & Dog

    Water Mat

This was a dud. What they don’t tell you is it takes a lot of water and water is heavy. I don’t have a hose or an indoor faucet that would allow me to hook one up if I did. I tried to fill it in the sink but the mat was too big. I tried the tub but before I had it more than 1/2 filled it was too heavy to move. Banner watched the tub fiasco with interest but that was as far as we got. No water bed for him this year.

  • Balboa

Balboa also turns 5 this year. His birthday is coming up in August. August 14 to be exact. Balboa is my lap cat. Where Banner is regal and aloof, Balboa is timid and shy with strangers. Not so with Banner or me. He is my high flying kitty. He likes to be up high and chases toys in leaps and bounds. That includes his big brother. He is also the leader of the demolition team. You’ve heard the expression “This is why we can’t have nice things”. Well that’s Balboa. He is also ridiculously funny.

Just look at those eyes. You can see the insanity!

🎁 Gifts, Real and Imagine

Their birthday gifts included handmade toys, a new paper bag,  a new cat scratcher shaped like a cactus (how fitting, right?), and the ultimate luxury—a nap uninterrupted by vacuum cleaners.

Cactus Cat Tree-

But the real gift was in the ritual. These feline birthdays remind me to slow down, appreciate softness, and indulge in silliness. They ground me in quiet moments and encourage me to create little bits of magic—not because it’s necessary, but because it’s meaningful.

🌙 Looking Ahead

Next year? I’m dreaming of a “Zen & Zoomies” spa retreat for Banner and a pirate-themed tunnel adventure for Balboa. Whatever the plan, it will be theirs—and that’s what makes it purrfect.

Its International Tiger Day

🧡 Roaring Back: Tigers, India, and the Power of Rediscovery 🧡

Every year on July 29, the world pauses to honor one of nature’s most iconic predators: the tiger. International Tiger Day, also known as Global Tiger Day, began in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit with a bold goal—double the number of wild tigers by 2022. In 2025, India stands as a beacon of hope, having not only met but surpassed that target.

🐅 India’s Tiger Triumph

India is now home to over 3,700 wild tigers, representing 75% of the global population. This remarkable recovery didn’t happen by chance—it’s the result of decades of conservation work under initiatives like Project Tiger, launched in 1973. The strategy blends protected reserves, community engagement, and modern technology like GPS tracking to monitor tiger movements.

What makes India’s approach unique is its emphasis on coexistence. Tigers aren’t confined to isolated parks—they roam landscapes shared with over 60 million people. Through compensation programs, eco-tourism, and education, communities have become active partners in conservation. In places like Pilibhit and Dudhwa, grassroots efforts and “Bagh Mitras” (Tiger Friends) help prevent conflict and build trust.

🌍 Lessons from “Extinct or Alive”

This story of tiger resurgence echoes the spirit of the TV show Extinct or Alive, hosted by wildlife biologist Forrest Galante. The show follows Galante as he searches for animals believed to be extinct, often uncovering evidence that they still survive in remote corners of the world.

In one episode, Galante’s team rediscovered the Fernandina Island Galápagos tortoise, a species unseen for over a century. Another episode featured the Zanzibar leopard, caught on camera in a moment that challenged long-held assumptions about extinction. These discoveries remind us that extinction isn’t always final—sometimes, it’s a call to look closer, listen harder, and believe in nature’s resilience.

India’s tiger story is a real-world version of this ethos. It proves that with science, cultural respect, and community support, even the most endangered species can make a comeback.

🌱 Why Tigers Matter

Tigers  are more than majestic creatures—they’re keystone species. Their presence helps regulate prey populations, maintain forest health, and support biodiversity. Forests where tigers thrive also act as carbon sinks, protect water sources, and reduce flood risks.

Saving tigers means saving entire ecosystems—and by extension, ourselves.

🐾 Final Roar

On this International Tiger Day, let’s celebrate not just the tiger’s survival, but its return. Let’s honor the communities, scientists, and storytellers who keep hope alive. And let’s remember that extinction is not a closed door—it’s a challenge to open new ones.

Because sometimes, the roar isn’t gone—it’s just waiting to be heard again.

Fly the Friendly Skies? A Closer Look at Aviation Safety in 2025

✈️ Fly the Friendly Skies?

In recent months, headlines have been dominated by unsettling stories of midair collisions, emergency landings, and tragic crashes. From the fiery evacuation of an American Airlines jet in Denver to the devastating Jeju Air disaster in South Korea that claimed 179 lives, travelers are understandably asking: Is it still safe to fly?

Let’s unpack the turbulence.

Aerial view of the wreckage of an airplane that crashed with 61 people on board in Vinhedo, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, on August 9, 2024. An airplane...

🚨 Recent Incidents That Raised Eyebrows

  • Denver Gear Fire: A Boeing 737 MAX 8 aborted takeoff after its landing gear caught fire. Passengers evacuated via emergency slides, with one hospitalized.

  • Midair Collision in Washington, D.C.: A commercial jet collided with a military helicopter, killing 67 people—the deadliest U.S. airline crash in nearly 20 years.

  • Jeju Air Tragedy: A belly landing and runway overrun in South Korea led to one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.

  • Alaska Crash: A plane overloaded with moose meat and antlers crashed, highlighting the risks of improper cargo handling.

  • Near Misses: A Southwest flight plunged nearly 500 feet to avoid another aircraft, and a Delta pilot had to dodge a B-52 bomber.

These incidents have sparked public anxiety, with one in four Americans reporting increased nervousness about flying.

📊 The Bigger Picture: Is Flying Still Safe

Despite the drama, aviation experts and data tell a reassuring story:

    • Commercial aviation remains one of the safest modes of transportation.  . The fatality rate is roughly 1 in 11 million
        —far lower than driving.
  • Most incidents involve private or general aviation, not commercial airlines.
  • Rigorous safety protocols, pilot training, and aircraft technology continue to evolve, making flying safer each year.
  • Runway incursions and near misses are being addressed with infrastructure upgrades and new air traffic control systems.

As aviation professor Chad Kendall puts it: “Thousands of operations have occurred since these accidents. Highly professional pilots and air traffic controllers are doing this right now”.

🛫 So, Should You Fly the Friendly Skies?

Yes—with informed confidence.
While recent events have shaken public trust, they also serve as catalysts for improvement. The aviation industry is doubling down on safety, transparency, and innovation. And statistically, you’re far safer cruising at 35,000 feet than driving to the airport.
So next time you buckle up and hear the engines roar, remember: the skies are still friendly—just a little more watchful.

Wander Wisely: Travel Hacks for Today’s Changing Globe

Travel Wisely

I thought maybe a quick trip back to the roots of this blog might be in order. Arounddustyroads.com  started as a travel blog to share tales of my adventures. Since retiring I haven’t been able to take many trips (none) but I still keep up with things going on in the world. It seems my mantra, “Travel is an adventure”, is more true than ever.  But fear not, I have a few tips to help enjoy the hustle and bustle.

Its a National Treasure- Mount Rushmore

In the evolving rhythm of global travel—where spontaneity often meets uncertainty—being savvy with your suitcase can make the difference between a stressful sprint and a breezy glide through adventure. Whether you’re hopping borders or taking the scenic route close to home, these creative travel hacks are your passport to peace of mind.

🧳 1. Pack Like a Poet, Not a Puzzle Solver

Roll, don’t fold—it saves space and wrinkles. Think in categories: “sleep,” “sightseeing,” “dining,” etc., and use packing cubes to divide them like chapters in your trip’s story.

cotopaxi cubos del dia packing cubes set of 3

packing cubes organize your suitcase

Quick Trick:

Toss dryer sheets into your luggage for a fresh scent that lingers longer than your jet lag.

📶 2. Go Digital, Travel Light

Boarding passes, hotel reservations, and itinerary docs—save them offline in a travel folder on your phone. Bonus tip: screenshot everything. Wi-Fi can be a fickle friend

Travel App Love:

Try an app like TripIt or Wanderlog to organize your plans effortlessly

💧 3. BYOB—Bring Your Own Bottle

Hydration without hesitation. Invest in a collapsible water bottle that fits neatly in your bag and avoids overpriced airport drinks. Many airports now offer refill stations

🕶️ 4. Dress for Security Success

Slip-on shoes, no belts, and layers that come off easily make TSA checks smoother than a silk scarf in a breeze. Empty your pockets into a zipped pouch before getting to the scanner.

🎒 5. Personal Item = Secret Weapon

Choose a sturdy tote or backpack with smart compartments. This is your command center: snacks, chargers, hand sanitizer, an extra mask, lip balm, and something cozy like a scarf or pashmina that doubles as a blanket.

😴 6. Travel Zen: The Calm Kit

Airports buzz. Flights hum. Your mind doesn’t have to. A small pouch with noise-canceling earbuds, lavender wipes, a sleep mask, and your favorite playlist or audiobook can transform your travel time into a moment of stillness.

Whether you’re returning to the skies or navigating new roads, travel today calls for flexibility, creativity, and a dash of serenity. With these hacks, you can turn any trip into a graceful experience—even when the journey takes unexpected turns.
