As most of you know, I usually keep political comments to a minimum. The biggest reason is I don’t consider myself a “deep thinker”. I’m just your “Average Josie”. I go along with my business and leave the governing to those elected to govern just as I leave the police to do the policing and the firefighter to fight the fires. I study issues to vote and then keep my vote to myself. But this government shut down has me irritated.
Listening to the sound bites and news anchors make me think I’m watching a bunch of toddlers fight in a sand box. Where is the leadership? Where is the responsibility? Where do these people, who are our elected officials, get off making decision that hurt the public? The same people they owe their jobs to?
One recent headline said 2.1 MILLION federal workers could be affected! But do you know what really gets me? These “elected officials” who are causing this atrocity still get paid! Yes, a government shut down won’t affect their paycheck.
I didn’t know why. I was complaining on FB that Congress should get “docked’ first and one of my friends said “27th amendment”. So I looked it up. The 27th amendment protects Congress from changes in their salary.
“The Twenty-seventh Amendment (Amendment XXVII) prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of the Congress from taking effect until the start of the next set of terms of office for Representatives. It is the most recent amendment to the United States Constitution. It was submitted to the states for ratification in 1789 and was adopted, over 200 years later, in 1992.”
Now as I said, I’m just a simple, average person. I never took any political science courses and even living in one of the most political states in the union, I manage to stay out of most political discussion. But I can’t help but think that any amendment that took 200 years to get ratified can’t be a good idea.
I don’t think John Q Public is free of blame either. We elected these morons. So maybe we deserve what we get but basic negotiating skills are learned in the sand box. Maybe we need to send Congress back to kindergarten so they can learn to play nice together.
Comments are welcome. Is anyone else embarrassed and annoyed by Washington?
Extremely irritated. . . . my son is getting an I.O.U. for his paycheck. . . . .I heartily agree ” watching a bunch of toddlers fight in a sand box.” I want to smack them upside the head and say “Grow Up Already, the rest of us has”.
Oh yeah! We’re on the same page here but wait til the next election…will anyone remember and vote these people out of office? I doubt it. That’s why they think they can do this stuff and get away with it. And that’s why we’re to blame as well.
For the last 3-4 years every time I go to the polls I vote against whoever is in office. We have to get them OUT. I wish we could call “do over” and start all over from scratch.
I hear a lot of people saying the same thing. Now they just have to follow through like you do
Very sad because they literally hold hundreds of thousands (800000+) lives in their hands as far a paychecks. I understand wanting to take a stance and stand up for what you believe but not when it hurts so many. I can not even fathom making a decision like this knowing how many it will hurt especially with what our economy has been like these last few years. We the people need to make a stand and figure out a way to get “real” people in office to represent us. All laws should be for all Americans. I can, in a way, understand not allowing Congress to vote themselves raises but in the real world shouldn’t we, “the people,” be the ones to vote for raises and cuts in salary? Aren’t they supposed to be working for us?
Exactly my feelings…and if they are going to take away paychecks, theirs should be the first to go
Way past time for term limits. Too many career pols that should be gone The name calling is what really gets me. I agree back to the sand box, and smack them when they start the name calling again. What a bunch of babies.
I agree Sandy, we do not need “career” politicians. They need to serve a term or two and then go home.
I agree. There’s no accountability. I think too many people vote on name recognition, not voting record or the issues
Hard to believe they are in charge of a country that’ supposed to be a world leader. Scary
I agree that their actions are deplorable. It is a disgusting, impossible situation that will only hurt the average citizen. They are acting like 2 year olds–not liking how a decision went years ago so fussing and complaining now.
Everyone seems to feel this way…comments here, FB, news, certainly me…so how can our “elected representatives” get away with this!
The only thing our country has shown since the government shut down is – WE KNOW HOW TO RUN THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT!! KEEP IT UP GUYS!!
I was thinking the same thing! The government better watch out. People are starting to wise up.
